114. Some people think that the family is the most important influence on young adults. Other people think that friends are the most important influence on young adults. Which view do you agree with? Use examples to support your position.

When it comes to who exerts the most important influence on young adults, one group believes that the family has the biggest influence on their young offspring, while another group thinks that the friends most deeply affect their fellows. I maintain that it is friends, and not the family, that hold this influence to a greater extent. My opinion is very convincing due to the following reasons.

First of all, young adults generally spend more time with their friends. When a person graduates from being a teenager and becomes a young adult, many things change in his/her life. This person will likely leave his/her parents and go to university, which will build a life distinct from his/her earlier one and enable him/her to have much more time to visit with his/her friends. These close friends are therefore, in a much better position to influence the young adult.

Furthermore, young adults usually share many similarities with their friends in psychology or mentality. Since they are undergoing the analogous situation, it is likely that the two friends will have similar perspectives on life. Because of this, a friend can have a better understanding of one’s life than a family member. For instance, almost all young adults do not want their parents, who are in most cases regarded as too traditional and stuck in their ways, to be involved in their personal affairs such as the choices of girlfriends/boyfriends.

Finally, another critical factor should not be neglected, that is the effect of friendship. It is undeniable that friendship is one of the most important relationships in a person’s life. Especially, for a young adult, the impact of significance of friendship is even greater. As his/her friends always help them not only in economy but in mentality as well, the young adult is probably willing to believe what his/her friends say or accept the friends’ opinions as well as suggestions. Although a young adult sometimes also get help from his/her family, he/she more often appears too self-assured and independent to realize the importance of family wisdom.

In conclusion, considering the factors of time that young adults spend with their friends, contemporary commonalities and friendship, it is quite proper to say that friends are the most important influence on young adults.
