The Road Not Taken

Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth

Then took the other, as just as fair

And having perhaps the better claim

Because it was grassy and wanted wear

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black

Oh, I kept the first for another day

Yet knowing how way leads on to way

I doubted if I should ever come back

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence

Two roads diverged in a wood

and I—I took the one less traveled by

And that has made all the difference

114. Some people think that the family is the most important influence on young adults. Other people think that friends are the most important influence on young adults. Which view do you agree with? Use examples to support your position.

When it comes to who exerts the most important influence on young adults, one group believes that the family has the biggest influence on their young offspring, while another group thinks that the friends most deeply affect their fellows. I maintain that it is friends, and not the family, that hold this influence to a greater extent. My opinion is very convincing due to the following reasons.

First of all, young adults generally spend more time with their friends. When a person graduates from being a teenager and becomes a young adult, many things change in his/her life. This person will likely leave his/her parents and go to university, which will build a life distinct from his/her earlier one and enable him/her to have much more time to visit with his/her friends. These close friends are therefore, in a much better position to influence the young adult.

Furthermore, young adults usually share many similarities with their friends in psychology or mentality. Since they are undergoing the analogous situation, it is likely that the two friends will have similar perspectives on life. Because of this, a friend can have a better understanding of one’s life than a family member. For instance, almost all young adults do not want their parents, who are in most cases regarded as too traditional and stuck in their ways, to be involved in their personal affairs such as the choices of girlfriends/boyfriends.

Finally, another critical factor should not be neglected, that is the effect of friendship. It is undeniable that friendship is one of the most important relationships in a person’s life. Especially, for a young adult, the impact of significance of friendship is even greater. As his/her friends always help them not only in economy but in mentality as well, the young adult is probably willing to believe what his/her friends say or accept the friends’ opinions as well as suggestions. Although a young adult sometimes also get help from his/her family, he/she more often appears too self-assured and independent to realize the importance of family wisdom.

In conclusion, considering the factors of time that young adults spend with their friends, contemporary commonalities and friendship, it is quite proper to say that friends are the most important influence on young adults.

84. Some people say that the Internet provides people with a lot of valuable information. Others think access to so much information creates problems. Which view do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Since the Internet was introduced to our life, dramatic improvements have been made in both technique and service, making it possible for a large amount of useful information to be accessed by not only adults but youths as well. Thanks to the Net, currently we are able to adapt ourselves to the fast developing information era.

School children and medical researchers alike will tell you that they could not work without the Internet and its ability to connect them to any number of websites and databases of information. Travelers who are thinking about visiting some places plan their trip by gathering information via the Internet, searching destination pages on-line in combination with hotels, attractions, and restaurants. Autograph seekers who used to be anxious for the celebrities’ addresses find it much easier to obtain contact information directly from their idols’ personal homepages or from correlative forums. Online stock trading enables investors to be offered with financial services and products such as real-time quotes, research reports, as well as checking of trading status. And almost everyone who has ever been surfing on the Net has benefited from relevant information available on it. No wonder a great number of people can hardly imagine what life was like before the Net appeared.

As far as I am concerned, the primary approach for me to gain information, mainly including study skills and materials and sports news, is the Internet. Take preparing for TOEFL for an example. There were no TOEFL training curriculums at school, and signing up for courses at private schools would cost me a considerable amount of money. Fortunately, with a laptop connected to the Net I can seek and download past years’ genuine questions and essay topics, as well as sample responses from the library website, in addition, there are practical experience shared by previous examinees on English study BBS’s and helpful tips at ETS’s official site, . When it comes to sports news, I believe it is quite easy for you to imagine that how important the scores, commentaries, statistics and even tidbits are for those avid sports fans like me who regard Houston Rockets, and Real Madrid, etc. as spiritual pillars.

In conclusion, the advantages and importance that the Internet information has in general, are undeniable. It is the mass of meritorious information provided by the Internet that develops in a great many people the ability to be socially and academically competent in their lives. The significance will become even more profound as modern technologies become more and more sophisticated, and proceed so rapidly that virtually a overwhelming number of people may enjoy the benefits of information on the Internet.

Please come over whenever it is convenient to you. And I’m looking forward to your constructive advice. Your objective comment is greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking time to read my article!

11. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Universities should give the same amount of money to their students’ sports activities as they give to their university libraries. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

It is fairly difficult for me to agree that universities should finance students’ sports activities equally as libraries, for I believe the main responsibility of a university is to develop students’ academic ability. Even though physical health is an important prerequisite for academic achievement, I don’t think sports activities deserve to be given the same amount of money as libraries.

As we know, a student’s main daily activity outside of the classroom is self-study, which occupies from four to eight hours everyday. Sports activity, on the other hand, occupies up to one and a half hours of his/her day. That means a student needs studying places more than sports facilitiesin other words sports play a comparatively minor role in college students lives. Therefore, universities must appropriate funds for large libraries designed to accommodate adequate students as well as books. Since a student spends less time on sports each day, facilities for sports need not be as well-equipped or extensive as those for libraries.

In addition to the basic building expense, universities must also pay a large amount of money every year on the maintenance of the libraries. Not only should these libraries purchase a lot of common books that cover all disciplines for reading and lending purposes and adding to collections, they should introduce a great number of up-to-date materials as well so that students are able to acquire the latest knowledge and do cutting-edge researches. The larger number of the students, the more comprehensive a library’s collection must be. Furthermore, a group of well-trained staff should be employed to take charge of collections and deal with trivial affairs. However, the continuing costs for sports are relatively low. Once those gyms or sports halls have been constructed and the facilities have been installed, only a few staff members are required to care for them, and universities do not necessarily provide funds to update them before they completely wear out. Actually for most of the students, they are happy to organize their own sports events and exercise routines without relying on the schools by asking for sponsoring.

Hence, considering that university libraries, if universities are really want to fulfil their main responsibility, totally need more financing than sports activities do, I think it is undoubtedly wise for universities to give more amount of money to the libraries.

Please come over whenever it is convenient to you. And I’m looking forward to your constructive advise. Your objective comment is greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking time to read my article!

37. Do you agree or disagree that progress is always good? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Version 1:

Frankly, I can hardly agree that progress is always good, although we human beings are pursuing progress in nearly every domain all the time. Whether or not progress is good depends on whether or not it exerts positive effect on humankind. It is indisputable that in all ages we have never benefited from every progress.

Let me give an illustration of weapons first. What the progress of weapon has brought to mankind is the increasingly serious sense of insecurity. In the old days, one soldier with a sword or a falchion could kill only one nearest enemy once. However, as we know that currently some countries’ armies own long-range missiles of destructive power, by which even the solidest targets can be at long bowls destroyed. Ironically, the only habitat we are provided, earth, can be wholly devastated for many times easily by what are called nuclear and biochemical weapons, which are manufactured by ourselves.

Take for another example, economic development, the progress which makes us suffer some crises from time to time while helps many people rise up from poverty. With the remarkable development of economy in China we are confronted with a variety of intractable environmental problems, an outstanding one of which is the deterioration of the water quality in Yangtze River. Health of millions of people living along its banks, whose drinking water comes from the river, has been severely threatened by its contaminated water. Likewise the excessively widening income gap between rural and urban areas is, to a great extend, the cost that we have to pay for such progress.

Even though I have given two persuasive evidences above to show the negative aspects of progress, I do not mean that progress is never good. Admittedly, progress generally makes people live better lives. For instance, the progress in medical treatment usually enables us to be the winners in the battles against life-threatening illness like tuberculosis, which used to be one of the most horrible killers.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that to say progress is always good is improper, for it sometimes influences our lives by running counter to our expectation. In fact, how it impacts upon us varies from situation to situation.

Combining others’ suggestions with mine, I got Version 2.

Version 2:

When it comes to progress, people always subconsciously associate it with something desirable. Actually human beings are pursuing progress in nearly every domain all along. But is progress really always good? My answer is negative. In my view of point, whether or not progress is good depends on whether or not it exerts positive effect on humankind.

My hometown Yangzhong, is only a small island in the lower reaches of Yangtze, but she unbelievably has the highest incidence of esophagus cancer in the world according to a survey from WHO. Likewise the excessively widening income gap between the rich and the poor is, to a great extend, the cost that we have to pay for such progress.

Additionally, despite that progress of computer technology has changed people’s lives dramatically in recent decades, the negative aspects of computer use, especially network, are arousing nationwide concern. For instance, we these years often hear of a new parlance, identity theft, something most of us had never imaged before the Net came into our lives. Now everyone, not just the wealthy, has to be careful that we don’t let some crooks get hold of our PIN numbers or credit card information. Moreover, many people like downloading music and printing out articles from the Net. But what about a thought for those who create this stuff and get stiffed for the royalties they should be able to make from their hard work?

In conclusion, I strongly deny that progress is always good, for it sometimes influences our lives by running counter to our expectation.
